Boron is absorbed by plants in the form of the anion BO3− 20 % min. w/w

It is available to plants in moderately soluble mineral forms of Ca, Mg, and Na borates and the highly soluble form of organic compounds. Boron has many functions within a plant: it affects flowering and fruiting, pollen germination, cell division, and active salt absorption. The metabolism of amino acids and proteins, carbohydrates, calcium, and water are strongly affected by boron. Many of those listed functions may be embodied by its function in moving the highly polar sugars through cell membranes by reducing their polarity and hence the energy needed to pass the sugar. If sugar cannot pass to the fastest-growing parts rapidly enough, those parts die. Boron is not relocatable in the plant via the phloem. It must be supplied to the growing parts via the xylem. Foliar sprays affect only those parts sprayed, which may be insufficient for the fastest-growing parts, and is very temporary. Inadequate amounts of boron affect many crops, legume forage crops most strongly. Of the micronutrients, boron deficiencies are the second most common after zinc. Deficiency results in the death of the terminal growing points and stunted growth.
